Aran Island Hotels
If you ever looked out from the top of the Cliffs of Moher, or from the shorline around Galway, you will see three islands. These are the Aran islands of Inis Mor (the big island), Inis Meain (the middle island) and Inis Oirr (the East island).
The islands have a rich history and the locals speak Irish as their first language. Visitors with no Irish need not worry as everybody speaks English and you will feel welcome from the moment you set foot on shore.
The islands are well worth a visit if only for the beautiful scenery and enjoyable ferry ride from Rossaveal which is 40 kilometres west of Galway city, or from Doolin which is on the coast of Clare. However, they are also steeped in history. Probably the most famous landmark is Dun Aengus Fort on Inis Mor, an ancient fort that occupies a large portion of the western side of the island. The fort is perched on a 300 foot cliff with a shear drop to the Atlantic Ocean below.
Inis Mor is sometimes referred to as an outdoor museum as it has so many monuments dating from Christian and pre-Christian times. The smallest of the islands is Inis Oirr and it is closer to the coast of Clare and the magnificent cliffs of Moher. Just before the ferry boats arrive in a small harbour, you travel along the beautiful sandy beach with the houses of the village dotted around. It is a charming place to stay and enjoy traditional Irish hospitality.
Inis Meain is the quietest of the islands and is the least visited. This makes it a truly wonderful place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the modern world and enter a place where you can relax and find peace and tranquility. The terrain in hilly and there are wonderful views of the Cliffs of Moher.
